Almoradi: Located just inland from Guardamar del Segura and the Costa Blanca coastline, the traditional Spanish town of Almoradi is situated on the northern side of the River Segura and has a history going back many centuries. Almoradi has a resident population of about 18,000 and has an increasing international population due to recent property development in the town.
Almoradi History: Originally called Amarión, Almoradi was allegedly founded in 1196 BC by king Brigo and it was the location of settlements of Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors. It was the Moors who gave the town its present name and who established the town as an important agricultural centre using traditional Arab irrigation techniques to utilise the waters of the Segura river.
Originally Almoradi was controlled by the larger town of Orihuela and it finally became independent in 1586. Most of the town was destroyed by the earthquake of 1829 so most of the town's buildings date from after this time.

For many centuries Almoradi has been the home a water tribunal, whose job it is to settle disputes over irrigation in the region, fines are imposed iin ancient Spanish coins - Vellón Reals.
When visiting Almoradi be sure to take a look at the Cortés Theatre, the casino and the San Andrés church. Almoradi has a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops and a popular Saturday market, it holds a number of fiestas and celebrations including the Moors and Christians in July.
